About
Artist, metalsmith, Photoshop ninja, art teacher, writer, project manager... I do a little of everything. Hi, I'm Peggy Foy - thanks for checking out my work.
Designer. This site showcases my digital work: photography, retouching, and design for print and web. I currently work as a photo re-toucher for Zulily, a Seattle-based e-commerce company; a lot of the images you'll find here are samples of the re-touching work I've done there. You'll also see examples of logos, ad campaigns, and other projects I've designed both for my freelance work and for Zulily.
Maker. Outside of my day job, I am also a fine artist: I have a formal art background (BFA) in Jewelry and Metalsmithing from the University of Georgia, and I specialize in one-of-a-kind and limited edition art jewelry and small sculpture. I frequently shoot and re-touch images of my own metalwork - you'll find examples of my own photography throughout this site. (For more info on my jewelry work, visit peggyfoy.com or arcanametalwork.etsy.com.) Because of this part of my background, I have a high attention to detail and a sensitivity to nuances of process.
Girl Friday. To round out my visual design skills, I also bring to the table a strong arsenal of organizational, presentation, and writing skills. I worked as a Communications Specialist and Project Manager for Washington Mutual, and I currently teach at Pratt Fine Art Center. I have been running my own independent studio business since 2007. To say I'm a highly motivated self-starter is an understatement; I have too many cool ideas to be any other way. Out-of-the-box creative solutions to complex problems are just part of the way I do business.
Digital retouching is sometimes a sensitive issue, particularly when it comes to images of women. In editing photography I believe that a light touch goes a long way. My goal is to make a person look like they do "on their best day." I won't alter someone's appearance to the point where it no longer looks like them; but, I see it as my job to look for ways to use Photoshop to do the same things that might have been done on set - like applying makeup, using flattering lighting, tailoring clothing, or even just giving someone a good night's sleep.
Make it look like you, on your best day.
My approach is informed by both my background as a fine artist (primarily designing for print and for juried art show submissions), as well as the design aesthetics of my clients and employers. The work that I have done for Zulily is defined by "cuteness" - the images are clean, bright, and natural. Work that goes before a jury tends to get a more sophisticated treatment. In all cases, I feel that it is the retoucher's job to be invisible - remove distracting elements, adjust color and lighting, but never leave evidence of the changes made. To be a professional re-toucher you have to be kind of like a ninja - just as fast, and just as invisible.
You have to be kind of like a ninja: invisible.
